Quaker Business and Ethical Business Research

Quakers and Business Group is proud to sponsor and support a number of academic research projects into Quaker Business history, ethical business practices, and Quaker business methods.

Here are details about our two current PhD projects.

Nicola Sleapwood - Q&B sponsored PhD student, Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre and University of Birmingham
Quaker business history in the 20th Century, so as to seek lessons from it to apply in the 21st Century business world.
Andy Fincham - Q&B sponsored PhD student, Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre and University of Birmingham
Factors which first enabled, and then drove Quaker commercial successes, and the relationship between these factors and Quaker beliefs.
You can find a list of publications by Andy Fincham here.

The convenor of the research working group is Nicolas Burton - Senior Lecturer, Strategic Management and International Business, Northumbria University
Nicholas is an experienced strategist and ethicist with an interest in the role of Quakers in business. He is currently proposing three new PhDs:
  • Quaker spirituality in a secular world of work.
  • The Quaker Business Method: lessons for contemporary decision-making.
  • Contemporary Quaker businesses – ethics of the past or the future?
In addition he leads the Spirituality in Management & Law research group at Northumbria University.

The wider working group includes people from academia and the workplace who are interested in furthering knowledge into ethical business and its relationship to Quakerism. Profiles of the working group members can be found here.
