News Update - July 2014

The main focus of this News Update is the Management Committee meeting held on 23rd July 2014.

Q&B becomes a Charitable Incorporated Organisation

Q&B has become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). The EGMs finalising the change were held before the Management Committee meeting on 23rd July 2014. You can read more about the change here. We would like to thank those involved in making the change to a CIO - a considerable piece of work.

Quaker Bank Project

The Quaker Finance Trust (QFT) is now in a position to offer its initial product, an unsecured loan (known as a debenture) for ethical and sound businesses wanting to reduce their cost of medium term borrowing. The aim of this first step is to facilitate arrangements to use the 'mend the world' funds of Area Meetings to affirm and encourage the high ethical standards of Quaker Schools and other Quakerly businesses.

You can read more about QFT at its new website.

Working in Trust Project

The Working in Trust project has expressed its thanks to Q&B for the grant awarded to it and reported on how the grant has been used to achieve two main outcomes;

  • Create the Working in Trust website and provide on-going support to a ‘community of practice’ where individuals and organisations can share their experience and ideas.
  • Develop a diagnostic questionnaire that helps individuals understand the key elements of a trust based, multiple stakeholder organisation, and allow individuals and organisations to review/assess their levels of openness and transparency, mutual support, consistency and reliability.

You can find out more about Working in Trust at its website.

Q&B – looking back, looking forward

The July Management Committee meeting is when we look at how things have gone over the past year. Also, next year we will come to the end of the five year period covered by our strategy that was developed in 2011, so it was an opportunity to reflect over a longer time frame.

Currently, our membership is stable at around 150 members and when we looked back over five years the general opinion is that Q&B has continued to develop - almost doubling its membership. We felt this was helped by the ‘strategy day’ held in 2011, which acted as a catalyst. We plan to run another ‘strategy day’ next year so that Q&B members can contribute to the group’s on-going development.

Looking ahead to the Spring Gathering and AGM 2015 – Northampton

Please put the date of Saturday 18th April 2015 in your diary for the Spring Gathering and AGM. The theme of the day is Citizen Journalism and aims to provide individuals with some practical tools and techniques. The objective will be to empower people to explore the realities of social inequality in their communities and to examine what might be done about it.

Next Q&B Event

Annual Conference, Wednesday 5th November 2014 – Friends House, London

This year’s conference will be on the theme of ‘FOOD – there’s a story behind everything we eat’. The conference will focus on what is happening in the production and distribution of our food and will help you to think about what you can do to encourage good practice and discourage the bad. There will also be a social gathering on the evening of Tuesday 4th November in the Friends House restaurant.
