News Update July 2013
The main focus of this News Update is the Management Committee meeting held on 11th July 2013.
Changes to Co-clerking Roles
Having previously changed our approach to clerking to be co-clerking by two people, Mark Lockwood and Elizabeth Redfern, we have decided to extend this to be a team of three co-clerks, with no assistant clerks. We feel this emphasises the importance of equality and, given the demands many have upon their time, will spread the work and encourage more Q&B members to consider being part of the clerking team in the future.
20th Century Quaker Business History Project
We are delighted to report that this project has managed to secure funding through the hard work of Tim Phillips and Winston Duguid. The funding has been generously provided by a combination of Quaker Trusts, Quaker Meetings and individual Friends. We would like to express our deepest thanks to all the funders, especially Edward Cadbury Trust, William Cadbury Trust, Friends Historical Society, Godric and Anne Bader. Quaker Bank Project
The project continues to gain momentum. John Lovatt reports that meetings have taken place about the use of the word Quaker in the bank’s name, which the project working group feels is important. The current focus is to clearly define the products to be offered and develop the business plan. The project is to form a significant part of the Annual Conference in November, see below.
Getting Involved in Our Projects
We’ve mentioned two of our projects but there are others that are in progress or being started. Our projects are managed by the Development Working Group (DWG). Membership of this group is a great way to be more involved in Q&B’s work. To find out more about joining the group, please contact Eoin McCarthy, the DWG convenor. If you have a project in mind that ties in with our purpose of ‘promoting Quaker values in business and the workplace’, please bring it forward by contacting Eoin.
Looking ahead to the Spring Gathering and AGM 2014 – Priory Rooms, Birmingham
Please put the date of Saturday 5th April 2014 in your diary for the Spring Gathering and AGM. The theme is still in development, with the front runners being ‘Cooperatives’, or ‘Small Business Entrepreneurship’. If you would like to support either of these themes, or have an alternative please contact Elizabeth Redfern.
Q&B Continues to Grow
Our annual round up of statistics has been completed and it’s great to be able to report that the group continues to grow, with the number of members now standing at 169, up from 156 this time last year. However, our website traffic is down by around 25%. We believe this a reflection of the fact that we now communicate more through direct emails to members and have published fewer articles. If you have an article that you consider would be appropriate for the website, or if you come across one that you believe would be of interest to a wider audience, please get in contact as the quality of our website content affects the number of visitors.
Next Q&B Event
Annual Conference, Wednesday 13th November 2013 – Friends House, London
This year’s conference will be on the theme of the Quaker Finance Trust and Quaker Bank Project. It’s your opportunity to contribute to the way the organisation will be run and the products and services it offers. There will also be a social gathering on the evening of Tuesday 12th November in the Friends House restaurant.
